Most Indian small businesses already run on Tally. Many also run on WhatsApp groups, Excel sheets, and one person who knows where everything is.

The ERP question is not really about accounting. It is about what happens when that second set of tools starts to break. Stock that does not match. Orders lost in chats. A GST notice because an e-invoice went in late.

So this guide covers the best ERP software for small business in India in 2026: TallyPrime, Zoho, ERPNext and custom systems. What each costs, what the new GST rules demand, and the clear signs you have outgrown Tally.

The short answer

  • Under ₹5 crore turnover, simple operations: TallyPrime or Zoho Books is enough. Do not overbuy.
  • Growing, with stock, branches or a remote team: Zoho's wider suite or ERPNext.
  • Operations that do not fit any standard software: keep Tally or Zoho for accounts, and build custom modules around them.

Most small businesses should not replace their accounting software. They should extend it.

Is Tally an ERP?

Partly. TallyPrime handles accounting, GST, inventory, payroll and basic manufacturing, and many small businesses use it as their ERP. It is trusted by CAs, familiar to accountants across India, and very good at what it does.

Where it is thinner is everything outside the accounts office: field sales, dealer ordering, production planning, mobile approvals, and connecting to other apps. That gap is where most "we need an ERP" conversations start.

Prices exclude 18% GST. Implementation, training and partner fees are extra for every option.

TallyPrime

TallyPrime Silver costs ₹22,500 one-time for a single user, and Gold costs ₹67,500 for multiple users on your office network. You can also rent: ₹750 a month for Silver or ₹2,250 for Gold. After the first year, TSS renewal for updates costs ₹4,500 (Silver) or ₹13,500 (Gold) a year.

Strengths: fast, reliable, every accountant knows it, strong GST and e-invoicing support.

Limits: it is built around the desktop. Remote access is a paid add-on, mobile use is limited, and custom changes need Tally-specific developers.

Zoho Books and the Zoho suite

Zoho Books is free for businesses under ₹25 lakh turnover, then runs from ₹899 to ₹9,999 a month depending on features. Zoho Inventory adds stock and order management, and Zoho One bundles 45+ apps, from CRM to HR, at about ₹1,250 per employee a month.

Strengths: cloud-first, works on any device, strong integrations, GST e-invoicing built in, and you can start small.

Limits: costs grow with users and add-ons, and deep manufacturing workflows are not its strongest area.

ERPNext

ERPNext is open-source ERP software. The licence is free, with no per-user fees, and hosting starts at about $5 a month on its official cloud.

Strengths: genuine ERP depth, including manufacturing, stock, purchasing, HR and projects, with unlimited users and full control.

Limits: the software is free, the setup is not. A partner-led implementation for around 25 users typically costs $20,000 to $60,000 in the first year. You need a good implementation partner, and ideally someone in-house who owns it.

Custom ERP or custom modules

A custom system is built around how your business actually works. Most small businesses do not need a full custom ERP. They need one or two custom pieces, like a dealer ordering app, a production tracker, or a field sales app, that sync with Tally or Zoho.

The GST rules your ERP must handle in 2026

Several GST changes took effect from April 1, 2026. Whatever software you use must keep up.

Mandatory e-invoicingTurnover above ₹5 crore in FY 2025-26Generate e-invoices through the government IRP for B2B sales
30-day IRP reportingTurnover of ₹10 crore and aboveReport each e-invoice within 30 days, or it is invalid for the buyer's input tax credit

When do you outgrow Tally?

Tally is not the problem. These are the signs that your business has grown around it:

  • Stock in Tally rarely matches the godown. Counts are fixed at month end, not tracked in real time.
  • Orders arrive by WhatsApp and phone and someone re-types them into Tally.
  • Your sales team cannot check stock or prices from the field without calling the office.
  • Dealers or distributors call for order status every day.
  • Production is planned in Excel and nobody knows exactly what is in progress.
  • The owner waits for a report instead of seeing numbers on a phone.
  • You have more than one location, and combining data takes days.
  • E-invoices are raised late because invoices start outside the system.

If two or three of these sound familiar, it is time to look beyond accounting software. That does not always mean throwing Tally out.

Tally vs Zoho: which is better for a small business?

In short: choose Tally if your accountant runs the show from the office and your operations are simple. Choose Zoho if your team is spread out, works from phones, and needs CRM, inventory and accounts to talk to each other.

Replace or extend: the custom ERP question

The expensive mistake is replacing everything at once. Migrating years of accounting data, retraining your accountant and changing how your CA works is slow and risky.

The smarter route for most small businesses is to keep Tally or Zoho for accounts and GST, and build only what is missing on top of it.

Picture an auto parts manufacturer in Ludhiana with 40 staff and 200 dealers. Tally works fine for its accountant. The pain is elsewhere: production is tracked on a whiteboard, and dealers call all day to ask about stock and dispatch.

Instead of a full new ERP, it adds two custom pieces: a production tracking app for the shop floor, and a dealer ordering app that shows live stock and order status. Both sync with Tally, so invoices and GST stay exactly where the accountant expects them. The accountant's world barely changes. Everyone else's improves a lot.

This is the kind of work our team does at Nipralo. We build custom ERP modules, dealer portals and business apps that connect to the accounting software you already trust. You can see examples in our web and mobile app portfolio and case studies.

What it costs over three years

Year one prices can mislead. Here is a rough three-year view for a business with about 10 users.

Approximate 3-year software cost for about 10 users, before GST and partner fees
OptionAssumption3-year software cost
TallyPrime GoldOne multi-user licence, TSS renewal in years 2 and 3~₹94,500
Zoho Books Premium₹2,999 a month~₹1,08,000
Zoho One10 employees at ₹1,250 each a month~₹4,50,000
ERPNextCloud hosting plus freelancer-led setup~₹3 lakh to ₹13 lakh
Custom modules on Tally or ZohoOne or two focused apps, plus yearly maintenanceFrom ~₹4 lakh to build, plus 15% to 25% a year

These are approximate software costs only, before GST, training and partner fees. They show the shape of each choice, not a quote.

How to choose the right ERP in five steps

  1. List your daily operations, not features. Write down how an order moves from enquiry to delivery to payment, and where it gets stuck.
  2. Mark what happens outside your software. Every Excel sheet, WhatsApp group and phone call is a gap.
  3. Check your GST position. If your turnover is near ₹5 crore or ₹10 crore, e-invoicing and the 30-day rule must be handled cleanly.
  4. Try the simplest option first. Tally or Zoho may cover more than you think with the right setup.
  5. Build custom only for the gaps that standard software cannot fill, and make sure it syncs with your accounts.

The bottom line on the best ERP software for small business in India

The best ERP software for small business in India in 2026 depends on where your business hurts. TallyPrime is still excellent for accounts and GST. Zoho suits cloud-first teams that need sales, stock and accounts connected. ERPNext gives real ERP depth if you have a good implementation partner.

You outgrow Tally when your operations, not your accounts, start living in WhatsApp and Excel. Even then, the answer is usually to extend it, not replace it.

Is Tally an ERP?

Arrow Icon

How much does ERP cost in India?

Arrow Icon

TallyPrime costs 22,500 rupees one-time for Silver or 67,500 rupees for Gold, plus GST and yearly renewal. Zoho Books is free under 25 lakh rupees turnover and then costs 899 to 9,999 rupees a month. ERPNext software is free, but implementation for a growing business can cost several lakh rupees.
