ChatGPT Work vs Claude Cowork: Pricing, Powers, and Limits of Both AI Agents Ranked
In one week, the two biggest AI labs shipped the same product. On July 7, Anthropic pushed Claude Cowork onto web and mobile. On July 9, OpenAI answered with ChatGPT Work. Same category, same promise: hand the AI a whole project, walk away, come back to finished work.

What Just Happened
This isn't another chatbot update. Both products belong to a new category: AI agents that do office work, not just talk about it.
You give the agent an outcome. "Analyse these 40 invoices and build a summary deck." It plans the steps, works for minutes or hours, and returns actual files: spreadsheets with formulas, formatted presentations, documents, even small web apps.
The timing was no accident. Forbes reported that OpenAI's launch highlights the growing battle to build autonomous workplace agents. Anthropic got there first. OpenAI just showed up with a bigger megaphone.
What ChatGPT Work Actually Is
ChatGPT Work runs on GPT-5.6, OpenAI's new model family, and extends Codex, the agent tech OpenAI built for programmers, to general office work.
Three things stand out. First, reach: it launched with a directory of over 1,400 connectable apps, including Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, Salesforce and Teams. You point the agent at a tool by typing @ and its name. Second, muscle: Pro and Enterprise users get an "ultra" mode that runs four agents in parallel on one task. Third, price of entry: on the new desktop app, ChatGPT Work is available on every plan. Including free.
It works mainly in a virtual browser environment plus a desktop "Computer Use" mode. Strong for web research, form filling, and pulling data from many sites into one deliverable.
What Claude Cowork Actually Is
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's version, and it has a six-month head start. It launched in January 2026, went generally available in April, and expanded to web and mobile on July 7, two days before OpenAI's event.
That maturity shows in two places. First, files: Cowork works directly on your file system. Point it at a messy folder of 200 files and it reads, organises, and builds deliverables from them. Second, Microsoft 365 depth: Cowork has had read access to Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams since February. In July, Anthropic added write access. It can now send email, manage your calendar, and edit SharePoint files, with admin consent and every send attributed to you.
The usage numbers are real too. Anthropic published data from 1.2 million Cowork sessions across more than 600,000 organisations. A third of that work was business process tasks: finance, HR, admin. Only about 9% was software development. Regular businesses, not developers, are the actual users.

Both tools share an uncomfortable truth: neither will tell you in advance what a task costs.
ChatGPT Work is usage-metered on the same structure as Codex. A task burns a variable slice of your plan's allowance depending on complexity. Launch-week users reported single substantial tasks eating most of a usage window. Ultra mode multiplies the burn by design, because four agents cost four times one.
Cowork draws on your Claude plan's limits. Early reports are just as spicy. One user saw a single presentation-building task consume roughly $45 of usage. A Pro subscriber found one five-hour session ate about 15% of a weekly allowance. And there's a catch worth knowing: new Cowork capabilities roll out to the $100+ Max plans first. The shiny feature in the announcement is often not the thing your $20 plan has today.
Our take: treat agent runs like meetings, not messages. Schedule the ones that earn their cost. Write the brief properly the first time, because five sloppy runs cost five times one good one.

Email, calendar, and Microsoft 365: Cowork
Cowork can send email, manage calendars, and edit SharePoint files today, with permissions borrowed from your own Microsoft account. ChatGPT Work hasn't matched that depth at launch.

Here's what both tools have in common. You start the task. Every time.
