DeepSeek Review 2026: Can It Replace ChatGPT for Your Business?

In early 2025, DeepSeek was the cheap Chinese AI that rattled global markets. In 2026, the story is more complicated.
In August, DeepSeek raised the price of its top model by up to 14 times. In September, OpenAI launched GPT-6 Luna at a lower price than DeepSeek's cheapest off-peak rate. And DeepSeek still stores user data on servers in China.
So this DeepSeek review answers one practical question for Indian business owners: can it replace ChatGPT for your business? For a few jobs, yes. For most, no. Here is why.
DeepSeek review 2026: the short answer
What DeepSeek is in 2026
DeepSeek is a Chinese AI company that releases strong models with open weights, meaning anyone can download and run them.
Its current lineup has two models. DeepSeek V4 Pro is the flagship, made generally available in August 2026. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, released in September, is the cheaper, faster model. Both handle up to 1 million tokens of context, and the weights are released under the permissive MIT licence.
It is popular, but far smaller than ChatGPT. Its website drew about 354 million visits in August 2026, roughly 6% of ChatGPT's traffic, and about half of DeepSeek's desktop traffic came from China.
DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: price
Prices are list API rates from DeepSeek's official pricing page and OpenAI, as of October 2026.
Two things stand out. DeepSeek V4 Pro is still far cheaper than OpenAI's flagship GPT-6 Astra. But at the low end, GPT-6 Luna now costs less than DeepSeek Flash, even at DeepSeek's off-peak rate.
For the chat apps, price is no reason to switch either. DeepSeek's app is free, and ChatGPT Go is free in India as a promotion until December 2026.
The peak-hour catch for Indian businesses
DeepSeek charges double during peak hours: 01:00 to 04:00 and 06:00 to 10:00 UTC on weekdays. In India, that is 6:30 to 9:30 am and 11:30 am to 3:30 pm IST.
That covers a big part of the Indian working day. If your team or your app uses DeepSeek mostly during office hours, plan on the peak price, not the headline off-peak rate.
How good is DeepSeek?
Very good for its price, especially at coding and reasoning. DeepSeek V4 Pro scores 80.6 on SWE-bench Verified, a common coding test, close to the best closed models of a year ago.
It trails the leaders on longer, multi-step tasks. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, which tests whether a model can finish real jobs in a terminal, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash scored 31.2% in Morph's September ranking, against 57.9% for GPT-6 Astra.
For everyday drafting and analysis, most staff would find it capable. For agents that run long tasks on their own, it is not yet at the top.
The real issue: your data
Price and quality are close enough to debate. Data is where DeepSeek's hosted service falls short for most businesses.
DeepSeek's privacy policy states that it stores the information it collects on servers in the People's Republic of China. It also says it uses what users share to train and improve its models, and the policy does not describe a way to opt out.
Compare that with ChatGPT's business plans, where OpenAI says it does not train on your data by default.
What governments have done
India has not banned DeepSeek for private businesses. But India's Finance Ministry told its employees not to use AI tools like DeepSeek and ChatGPT for official work, citing risks to confidential data. And India's data protection rules take full effect in May 2027, which will make careless handling of customer data a bigger legal risk.
Content restrictions
DeepSeek's models also limit answers on topics sensitive to the Chinese government, such as Taiwan and Tiananmen Square. For most business tasks this never comes up. For research, media or policy work, it can.
The open-weights way around the data problem
Here is the part most reviews skip. Because DeepSeek's weights are open, you do not have to send data to DeepSeek at all.
You can run the models on your own servers, or use them through cloud providers that host them outside China. Your data then stays wherever you choose, and you keep the low cost of the model itself.
The catch is effort. These are very large models. Running them yourself needs expensive GPU servers and people who know how to manage them. For most small businesses, using a trusted third-party host is the realistic route.
Can DeepSeek replace ChatGPT for your business?
An example
Picture an edtech company in Kolkata that generates thousands of practice questions and explanations every day. None of it includes personal data.
Running that workload on DeepSeek, through a host outside China and timed for off-peak hours, can cut its AI bill sharply. But its customer support chatbot, which handles student names, phone numbers and payment queries, stays on a business-plan model with clear data terms.
That split is the smart way to use DeepSeek: for the right jobs, not as a blanket replacement. It is also how our team at Nipralo builds AI automation and custom software: the cheapest model that is safe for each task, behind a setup that lets you switch. You can see examples in our case studies and web and mobile app portfolio.
How to test DeepSeek safely
- Never paste customer, employee or client data into the DeepSeek app or website.
- Pick one non-sensitive, high-volume task, like rewriting product descriptions or generating practice content.
- Run the same task on DeepSeek, GPT-6 Luna and your current tool, and compare quality and cost.
- Check when you run it. Measure cost at peak and off-peak hours in IST.
- If DeepSeek wins, use it through a host outside China or your own servers, not DeepSeek's own app.
The bottom line: DeepSeek review 2026
This DeepSeek review comes down to one line: strong models, weak data terms. DeepSeek V4 Pro is still much cheaper than ChatGPT's top model and good at coding and reasoning. But its hosted service stores data in China, uses it for training, and is no longer the cheapest option at the low end.
DeepSeek cannot replace ChatGPT for your team's daily work, or for anything involving customer data. It can be a smart, low-cost choice for non-sensitive bulk tasks, especially through hosts outside China.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is DeepSeek safe to use for business?
Not for sensitive data on DeepSeek's own app or API. Its privacy policy says data is stored on servers in China and used to train its models, with no opt-out described. It can be used more safely for non-sensitive tasks, or by running its open models on your own servers or through a host outside China.
Is DeepSeek banned in India?
No, DeepSeek is not banned for private businesses in India. India's Finance Ministry did tell its employees not to use AI tools like DeepSeek and ChatGPT for official work because of data risks. Businesses should still avoid putting customer data into it, especially with India's data protection rules taking full effect in May 2027.
Is DeepSeek cheaper than ChatGPT?
It depends on the model. DeepSeek V4 Pro is much cheaper than OpenAI's flagship GPT-6 Astra. But OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna, at 0.10 US dollars per million input tokens, is now cheaper than DeepSeek's Flash model. DeepSeek also charges double during peak hours, which overlap much of the Indian working day.
Can I run DeepSeek on my own server?
Yes. DeepSeek releases its models with open weights under the MIT licence, so you can download and run them yourself. The models are very large and need powerful GPU servers, so most small businesses use a trusted third-party host instead.
Is DeepSeek better than ChatGPT for coding?
DeepSeek is strong for coding at its price, with V4 Pro scoring 80.6 on the SWE-bench Verified test. It trails the top models on long, multi-step coding tasks, such as those measured by Terminal-Bench 4.0. For non-confidential code it is a capable, lower-cost option.
