Gemini 4 Argon vs GPT-6 Astra: Should Your Business Wait for Google?

Google finally put the name Gemini 4 on a model on September 30, 2026. Almost nobody can use it.
The first model, Gemini 4 Argon, went to a small group of cybersecurity organisations. Everyone else, including paying API customers, has been told access is coming, with no date. Meanwhile, OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra has been in paid ChatGPT plans and the API since early September.
So if you are searching for the Gemini 4 release date, the honest answer is: announced, priced, and still mostly locked. For a business, the real question is whether to wait for Google or build with what is available today.
Gemini 4 release date: what Google has confirmed
What is Gemini 4 Argon?
Argon is the first model Google has released under the Gemini 4 name. Google announced it on September 30 with a focus on two things: writing code and finding security flaws.
Three details stand out:
- Huge outputs. It can write up to one million tokens in a single response, up from 64,000 before. That matters for large code changes and long documents.
- Low launch price. $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens during an introductory period, rising to $4 and $20 later.
- Strong reported scores. 77.9% on DeepSWE v1.1, an agentic coding test. Google says it beats rival models on most of its internal tests, but has not published a full comparison.
Why most people can't use it yet
Argon can find, check and fix serious software flaws on its own. In the wrong hands, the same skill helps attackers. So Google is giving it first to defenders through its Fairwind Program, which covers groups like governments, healthcare providers and telecom companies.
Google is not alone in this. OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra to the public but kept its most advanced cyber abilities for vetted organisations. Anthropic's most capable model is also limited to selected partners. Releasing the strongest models to defenders first is becoming the industry pattern.
Gemini 4 Argon vs GPT-6 Astra
Both coding scores come from the companies themselves, not independent testing, so treat the gap as a signal rather than a result.
Price is the headline
At launch prices, Argon costs one fifth of Astra per token. Even after the introductory period ends, it would cost about 40% of Astra's rate. If Google opens API access at these prices, Argon becomes the cheapest frontier model on the market.
But availability decides
A cheaper model you cannot use is worth nothing to your business this month. Astra is in ChatGPT Business and Enterprise today, and on the API and AWS. Argon is not in the Gemini app, not on the general API, and has no public date.
What about Gemini 4 Pro and Gemini 3.5 Pro?
Many articles talk about a "Gemini 4 Pro" launching in October. Google has not confirmed that name or date. Pages claiming it already beats GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5 cite leaked benchmarks without numbers. Treat them as rumours.
What Google has said is more cautious. In July, Sundar Pichai said Google "will need a larger Gemini 4 base model" to compete at the frontier. In late September, DeepMind head Koray Kavukcuoglu said Gemini 4 was in post-training, and that Google wanted to release an early version "as soon as possible", well before the end of 2026.
Then there is Gemini 3.5 Pro. Google promised it after I/O in May, for June. As of early October, we could not find a public release. Google has kept shipping faster, cheaper Flash models instead: 3.5, 3.6, 3.7 and 3.8.
Should your business wait for Google?
For most businesses, no. Use what works today and stay ready to switch.
An example
Picture a logistics software company in Navi Mumbai. Its route-planning app uses Gemini Flash for summarising driver notes, and its developers want a stronger model for a big code migration.
Waiting for Argon would stall the migration for an unknown period. So the team runs the migration now with a top-tier model that is available, keeps Gemini Flash for the high-volume summaries it handles well and cheaply, and puts its AI calls behind one layer in the code. When Argon opens to API customers, testing it is a one-day job, not a rebuild.
That is the approach our team takes at Nipralo when building AI automation and custom software: pick the best model available for each job today, and design so you can switch tomorrow. You can see examples in our case studies and web and mobile app portfolio.
How to prepare for Gemini 4
- Do not pause current work for it. There is no public date, and it may come in stages.
- List where you use AI today and which tasks would benefit from a stronger or cheaper model.
- Keep your AI calls in one place in your code, so changing models is a setting, not a rewrite.
- Save a set of real test tasks from your business, so you can compare any new model in a day.
- Watch for API access, then test Argon against your current model on cost and quality before switching.
The bottom line on the Gemini 4 release date
The Gemini 4 release date has arrived in name only. Gemini 4 Argon was announced on September 30, 2026, priced well below GPT-6 Astra, and given first to cyber defenders. Paid API and AI Ultra access is promised, with no date. A wider Gemini 4 or Pro release is likely in the coming months, but not confirmed.
Don't wait for it. Build with what is available, keep your setup flexible, and test Argon the week it opens up.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Gemini 4 coming out?
Google announced the first Gemini 4 model, Gemini 4 Argon, on 30 September 2026. It is currently limited to cybersecurity organisations in Google's Fairwind Program. Google has promised access for paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers but has not given a date.
What is Gemini 4 Argon?
Gemini 4 Argon is the first model in Google's Gemini 4 line, focused on coding and cybersecurity. It can produce up to one million tokens in a single response and scored 77.9 percent on the DeepSWE v1.1 coding test, according to Google. Its first users are cyber defenders such as governments, healthcare providers and telecom companies.
Can I use Gemini 4 in the Gemini app?
Not yet. Gemini 4 Argon is not available in the Gemini app as of early October 2026. Google has said broader access will start with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers, without giving a date.
How much does Gemini 4 cost?
Google has announced API pricing for Gemini 4 Argon of 2 US dollars per million input tokens and 10 US dollars per million output tokens during an introductory period. After that, the price rises to 4 and 20 US dollars. That is well below GPT-6 Astra's 10 and 50 US dollars.
Is Gemini 4 better than GPT-6 or Claude?
It is too early to say. Google reports a higher coding score for Argon than OpenAI reports for GPT-6 Astra on the same test, but both figures are company-reported and Google has not published a full comparison. Claims that a Gemini 4 Pro beats rivals are based on unverified leaks.
