How to Make a Website 2026: Domain, Hosting, Design and DPDP Compliance Explained

Most small business websites in India fail for boring reasons. The domain was registered in a freelancer's name. The site looks great on a laptop and broken on a phone. The contact form sends leads to an inbox nobody checks.
None of these are design problems. They are planning problems, and they are easy to avoid if you know the steps.
This guide shows how to make a website in 2026, step by step: the domain, hosting, design, payments, and the new data protection rules every Indian business site will need to follow. With real costs at each step.
How to make a website: the 10 steps at a glance
The order matters. Most expensive mistakes happen when someone jumps to step 6 before finishing steps 1 to 3.
Step 1: Decide what the website must do
Start with the job, not the look.
Write down the three things a visitor should be able to do on your site. Call you. Book an appointment. See your work. Buy a product. Get a quote.
That list decides everything that follows. A site that only needs to show your work and collect enquiries is simple and cheap. A site that takes payments, shows live stock or lets dealers log in is a different project with a different budget.
Also write down who the site is for. A CA firm in Kalyan and a D2C brand selling across India need very different websites, even if both have five pages.
Step 2: Choose how you will build it
There are four realistic routes. Each one trades money for time and control.
Costs are typical Indian ranges from Hostinger's 2026 website cost guide.
Which route fits you?
Use a builder if you need a simple site fast and are happy to write your own content. Wix, Hostinger Horizons and Squarespace now build a first draft from a single prompt using AI.
Use WordPress if you want more control and someone on your team is comfortable with technology. It is flexible, but you are responsible for updates, security and speed.
Hire a freelancer for a straightforward site when you would rather not do it yourself. Check their past work, and get the domain and hosting in your own name.
Hire an agency when the site has to connect to your systems, take payments at scale, or carry a brand that needs real design work.
Step 3: Register your domain
Your domain is your address online, like yourbusiness.in or yourbusiness.com.
.in or .com?
If you sell mainly in India, a .in domain is a good choice and signals a local business. If you sell abroad or want to look global, .com is safer. If you can, buy both and point one to the other.
Watch the renewal price
First-year domain prices are often heavily discounted, sometimes under ₹100. The renewal price is what you will pay every year after, usually ₹500 to ₹1,500 a year. Compare renewal prices, not the offer.
Register it in your own name
This is the most important rule in this guide. The domain must be registered to your business, with your email and your login. Not your developer's, not your agency's, not your nephew's.
It is a common and painful problem: businesses that cannot change their own website because someone else controls the domain. Fixing it can take weeks.
Step 4: Choose your hosting
Hosting is where your website's files live.
If you use a builder, hosting is included. You do not need to buy it separately.
If you use WordPress or a custom site, you need a hosting plan. Expect about ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 a year for a small business site. Pick a provider with Indian or nearby servers, daily backups, and free SSL.
What SSL means
SSL is the padlock in the browser bar, and the "https" at the start of your address. It encrypts data between your visitor and your site. Every serious host includes it free now. If yours charges extra, change hosts.
Step 5: Plan your pages and write your content
Most small business sites need five pages:
- Home: what you do, who for, and how to contact you, all visible without scrolling far.
- Services or products: one section or page for each main offering.
- About: who you are, how long you have been in business, and why customers trust you.
- Work or reviews: photos, case studies, client logos or real customer reviews.
- Contact: phone, WhatsApp, email, address, map and a short form.
Write the content before the design starts. Designers can work around good content. They cannot fix missing content, and a site full of placeholder text is the most common reason projects drag on for months.
AI tools can help you draft, but edit every line so it sounds like you and includes real details: your city, your experience, your prices or price ranges.
Step 6: Design for mobile first
About 64.5% of real human web traffic in India is on mobile, according to Cloudflare Radar data for July 2026. For many local businesses, the share is higher.
So review every page on a phone first. Check that:
- Your phone number and WhatsApp button are tappable from every page.
- Text is readable without zooming.
- Images load quickly on mobile data.
- Forms are short. Name, phone and one question is often enough.
A clean, fast, simple site beats a beautiful, slow one. Customers on a phone give you a few seconds.
Step 7: Add contact options and payments
Contact
In India, WhatsApp is often the main way customers reach you. Add a WhatsApp button alongside your phone number and a short form. Make sure every form sends to an inbox or phone someone actually checks, and test it before launch.
Payments
If you sell online, you need a payment gateway. Razorpay, for example, has no setup or annual fee on its standard plan and charges a 2% platform fee plus GST, about 2.36% per transaction. Most builders and WordPress connect to Indian gateways easily.
For a service business, a simple "Pay now" link can be enough. You do not always need a full online store.
Step 8: Get your privacy and data protection right
This step is new, and most guides skip it.
India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules were notified on November 13, 2025. The rules on notice and consent become enforceable on May 13, 2027. If your website collects names, phone numbers or emails through a form, these rules will apply to you.
In practice, that means:
- A clear privacy notice saying what data you collect, why, and how people can ask you to delete it.
- Consent that means something. A checkbox the visitor ticks, not one already ticked for them.
- Collect only what you need. If you only need a phone number, do not ask for a date of birth.
- Keep it secure. Form data should not sit in an unprotected spreadsheet anyone can open.
Building this in now is far easier than fixing it in 2027. This is general information, not legal advice, so confirm your specific obligations with a lawyer.
Step 9: Set up SEO basics and launch
A website nobody finds does not help your business. Before launch:
- Give every page a clear title and description that says what it is and where you are, for example "CA Services in Kalyan | Your Firm Name".
- Connect Google Search Console so Google knows your site exists and tells you about errors.
- Create or update your Google Business Profile and link it to your website. For local businesses, this often brings more calls than the website itself.
- Add analytics so you can see how many people visit and what they do.
- Test on three phones and two browsers. Click every button and submit every form.
Then launch, and tell your existing customers. Your first visitors will come from people who already know you.
Step 10: Maintain it
A website is not a one-time job.
- Renew your domain and hosting on time. Turn on auto-renew.
- Keep backups. Builders handle this. On WordPress, check your host does it daily.
- Update WordPress, themes and plugins at least monthly. Outdated plugins are the most common way small sites get hacked.
- Refresh content every few months: new work, new reviews, updated prices.
Budget about ₹1,500 to ₹15,000 a year for maintenance support if you are not doing it yourself.
What it really costs: three examples
Common mistakes to avoid
- Domain or hosting registered in someone else's name.
- Paying for design before the content is written.
- Checking the site only on a laptop.
- A contact form that sends leads nowhere.
- No privacy notice on forms that collect personal data.
- Choosing the cheapest first-year offer without checking renewal prices.
When to bring in a team
You can do steps 1 to 10 yourself with a builder. Many small businesses should.
But if your website needs to connect to your billing or ERP, let customers or dealers log in, handle serious online sales, or stand out in a crowded market, it is worth working with a team that does this every day.
That is what we do at Nipralo. Our team plans, designs and builds custom websites and web apps for Indian businesses, with the domain and code always in your name. You can see examples in our web and mobile app portfolio and case studies.
The bottom line on how to make a website
How to make a website in 2026 comes down to doing the boring steps in the right order. Decide what it must do. Pick the route that fits your budget. Own your domain. Write content first. Design for phones. And build in data protection now, before the May 2027 deadline.
Do that, and even a ₹249 a month site can win you customers. Skip it, and an expensive one won't.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a website for my business?
Start by deciding what the site must do, then choose a route: an AI website builder, WordPress, a freelancer or an agency. Register your domain in your own name, write your content, design for mobile first, add contact and payment options, set up a privacy notice, and connect Google Search Console and your Google Business Profile before launch.
How much does it cost to make a website in India?
A website on a builder typically costs 2,000 to 6,000 rupees a year. A freelancer usually charges 10,000 to 1,00,000 rupees for a project. An agency or custom build costs about 50,000 to 1,50,000 rupees for a small business, and 1,50,000 rupees or more for an online store.
Can I make a website for free?
You can build and test a site for free on builders like Wix, but free plans show the builder's branding and do not include your own domain. For a business, a paid plan with your own domain is worth it, and many start at a few hundred rupees a month.
How long does it take to make a website?
A simple site on an AI website builder can go live in a few hours to a few days. A freelancer usually takes two to six weeks, and a custom agency build takes four to twelve weeks. The biggest cause of delay is usually content, not design.
Do I need a privacy policy on my website in India?
If your website collects personal data such as names, phone numbers or emails, you should have a clear privacy notice. Under the DPDP Rules notified in November 2025, notice and consent obligations become enforceable on 13 May 2027. Confirm your specific obligations with a lawyer.
